Hi all,

As has previously been mentioned, AFP-Nottingham 1.0 is to be held on
Saturday 19 October, sometime from 7:30pm onwards.

I've now found out that this weekend is also the weekend of the
Nottingham Beer Festival -- 300 beers and hours of fun for all the
family. So, what I'd like to suggest is..

Either..

a) We forget the beer festival and go to the pub anyway
b) A hardened bunch meet up earlier on and go to the beer festival,
with the meet proper being held in a pub somewhere.
c) The entire meet happens at the festival.

So..

a) would be a shame, as I'm certain there are many afpers out there
who enjoy getting drunk whilst pretending to be sampling lots
of beers and making learned comments like "mmmm, nice fruity
   flavour and a good finish".

b) seems like a good compromise to me -- finding places to hold meets
in the midst of a packed beer festival is probably rather hard, so
adjourning to the pub later on would be easy.

c) Not a good idea - see b).

I therefore suggest that we convene at 5:15 outside the Victoria Leisure
Centre (opening time is 5:30) for those interested in sampling beers,
and then at 7:30 for the actual meet which will be held in some pub
somewhere. Lots of people seem to want to go to the Trip to Jerusalem,
but it's closing four days after the meet for a 4-month refit and will
probably be absolutely *packed*. I'll ponder some locations and let
you know at a later date -- suggestions are welcome.

Could people who are considering turning up for one, the other, or both
of the sub-meets (particularly the beer festival bit) drop me some mail
so I have an idea of numbers. Stick "AFPMEET" in the Subject: header so
it gets siphoned off into the right mailbox.

Oh, limited crash space (in Beeston) is available - first come, first
served, bring your own sleeping bag.

Mike

Hi all,

This is just to let you know that Nottingham-1.0, scheduled for this
coming Saturday (19th October) has now been *postponed* to a later date
(provisionally, 9th November) as many people will doubtless be wanting
to go to the Ealing meet (Rocky Strikes Back) that evening, which has
had to be arranged at fairly short notice.

I can't see anything wrong with 9th November as far as my diary's
concerned, so I'll rearrange provisionally for that date (plus, it gives
more time to decide on a pub..)

I figured it would be a better plan to try and have one big meet in
Ealing for those who wanted to meet Rocky, rather than put people
through the mental torture of deciding which to go to.. (and running
the risk of nobody turning up to Nottingham, a bit like Warwick-0.1
beta.. *grin*)

Might be at Ealing myself, not sure whether it'd be too sad to drive down
for an evening. But then, I'm a sad kinda guy.

Cheers
Mike

Greetings folkes,

As most people will know, I postponed Nottingham-1.0 upon learning that
that was also the date of Ealing 3.nn - Rocky Strikes Back, and promised
to afpannounce a new date asap.

Sorry for the delay. I now suggest (nay, decree) that Nottingham-1.0 is
now to be held on the 30th November 1996 (a Saturday), after having
held conslutations with various people (and Darrell having pleaded for
"not the 23rd, please").

Further location details will follow. I think we'll have it in a pub,
just to be different.

Cheers
Mike

(PS - Meet-related mail to me should have "AFPMEET" in the subject header
if poss.- then it gets filtered into the right place.)

Hi folks,

Well, I promised to come up with some location details for the
forthcoming, if somewhat postponed, Nottingham-1.0 afpmeet, to be held
on the 30/11/96 (11/30/96 for merkins, as ppint would pput it.)

After much thinking and stuff, I've decided on the Victoria Hotel in
Beeston, a really good real ale pub which should be big enough to host
the meet and is easy to get to by car & train. We'll need to get
started relatively early to bag some furniture, as it's a popular
place, but there's no music so it should be fine for conversation.

Details in full
===============
The meet: Nottingham-1.0
The place: Victoria Hotel, Beeston
The date: Saturday 30 November, 1996
The time: Starting at around 7pm (1900 for 24-hour people)

If you're planning on coming, then please mail me (mpk@lspace.org)
with "AFPMEET" in the subject, so I have a vague idea of numbers.

Virtual Attendance
==================
Any afpers wishing to contribute to the meet in a "virtual" capacity
may either mail me before the meet and I'll find some sucker to read
your message out to the assembled masses, or on the night feel free to
ring my mobile, on (0973) 635384, with any greetings you feel the need
to pass on to the meet. (AFP meets are getting more like weddings
every week, aren't they?).

Crash Space
===========
Well, I have *very* limited crash space -- anyone else who can put
people up on their floors is invited to make themselves known..

How to get there
================
By train:
Take the train to Beeston. Walk out of the front of the station, and
head towards the centre of Beeston. Turn left down the first
substantial road you get to (i.e. not the housing development thing)
and bear round to the left. You'll come across the Victoria fairly
soonish -- basically, you can't miss it. It's actually right next to
the station, but there's no gate from the platform straight into the
pub yard, unfortunately..

By road:
I'm assuming you're coming from the M1. If not, you'll need to find
your own way to the west end of Nottingham and the A52 (otherwise
known as the Derby Road).
Leave the M1 at the "Nottingham - North" junction, which IIRC is
junction 25. It's the A52, anyway. Follow signs towards Nottingham,
and keep going until you're on a wide, three-lane road with a 40 limit
and running through a built-up area. Soon, you'll see a turning off to
the right signposted for Beeston -- the Wollaton Road, if I remember
correctly. There's a filter lane, and a filter arrow on the lights.
Follow this road around and keep going -- you'll pass through the
centre of Beeston (a pair of pedestrian crossings with pedestrian
precincts on both sides) and pass the fire station and the
multi-storey on the right. Keep going. When you get to a major
crossroads with the Queens Road and traffic lights (these are, I
think, the *second* set of lights), keep straight on towards the
station, then turn first right. If you go over the flyover, you've
gone too far! Follow the road and turn left at the next T-junction,
and you'll see the Victoria in front of you. Park where you can...

These are from memory -- I'll check they're correct and repost before
the meet if they aren't.

By air:
=======
Fly to East Midlands airport. Get in a taxi. Say, "Take me to the
Victoria, in Beeston, please". You can obviously afford to do this if
you're flying in specially for a meet..

Oh, the pub is fairly large and rambling -- there are several rooms on
the ground floor. You'll have to look around if you don't find us at
first.. or phone me if you get *really* lost.. *grin*

See you there. If not before.

Mike

Evenin',
Here are the final location details and directions for Nottingham-1.0 --
there have been a couple of (minor) corrections to the directions.
Any queries, drop me mail. Putting the word "AFPMEET" in the subject
would be helpful, so it gets sorted into the right folder.
See you Saturday.

Well, I have *very* limited crash space -- anyone else who can put

How to get there (E&O are, naturally, E)
================
By train:
Take the train to Beeston. Walk out of the front of the station, and
head towards the centre of Beeston. Turn left down the second
substantial street you get to, which is Grove Street. Turn left at the
end. You'll come across the Victoria fairly soonish -- basically, you

By road:

IIRC is junction 25. It's signposted (IIRC, again *grin*) Nottingham
if you're coming from the North, and "Nottingham North" if you're
coming from the South. Follow signs towards Nottingham, and keep
going over two roundabouts until you're on a wide, three-lane road
with a 40 limit and running through a built-up area, which becomes the
Derby Road. After about a mile, you'll see a turning off to the right
signposted for Beeston -- the B6006, Wollaton Road. There's a filter
lane, and a filter arrow on the lights. (If you get to a big
roundabout next to the "Priory" restaurant, and with shops on the
left, you've gone too far -- spin round the roundabout, then the
Wollaton Road will be approx. the third on the left). Follow this road
around and keep going -- you'll pass through the centre of Beeston (a
pair of pedestrian crossings with pedestrian precincts on both sides)
and pass the fire station and the multi-storey on the right. Keep
going. When you get to a major crossroads with the Queens Road and
traffic lights (these are, I think, the *second* set of lights after
the centre), keep straight on towards the station, then turn first
right. If you go over the flyover, you've gone too far! Follow the
road and turn left at the next T-junction, and you'll see the Victoria
in front of you. Park where you can...

If you get hopelessly lost, give me a ring. My mobile number's above.
Alternatively, once in Beeston most people should know the way to the
station (which the Victoria is near) so you could ask a friendly
denizen.

By air:
=======
Fly to East Midlands airport. Get in a taxi. Say, "Take me to the
Victoria, in Beeston, please". You can obviously afford to do this if
you're flying in specially for a meet..
