As poor old Lonewolf doesn't seem to have had much response
for his B'day meet :( I have aggreed to arrange a "proper"
one. (The whole thing kinda appeared out of an ICQ chat
where MEG wanted to talk to people without any delay :) )

Anyway - I am currently suggesting either the w/end of the
22rd/23th/24th Jan or the 5th/6th/7th Feb. (The SO is
probably moving away the last w/end in Jan :( ). I would
think that the Saturday would be best and I will probably
follow the general format of the last Oxford meet (2pm
lunchy type thing followed by a 7pm evening type thingy).

Comments, suggestions etc etc etc.

Stewart

The Schedule

14:00 Lunch and/or beer at Rosie O'Gradey's
A better example of the theme pub breed. This pub has the advantage of
being very easy to find (near a car park and the bus and rail stations).
Best Guiness in Oxford.

19:00 Move to the Head of the River
Good food pub and serves a decent selection of Fullers ales. Next to
the river so can be quite touristy (but not in February!) but has the
advantage of having a real fire on cold winter evenings :)

How to get to Oxford
Oxford has excellent transport connections and most places in the South
of England are within reasonable reach.

- From London:
There are two bus services:

The Citylink 90 (http://www.oxfordbus.co.uk/london/index.html)
The Oxford Tube (http://www.oxlink.co.uk/oxford/tube/)

Both services are regular and depart from Victoria rail station and pick
up at a number of points on their way out of London.

- From elsewhere:
Oxford is also on a main rail line and as such has good rail services.
The Railtrack web site can provide journey times (or ring 0345-484950).
There are also good bus links to Cambridge (Cambridge Coach Services
(http://www.cambridgecoaches.co.uk) - service 75, last bus back to
Cambridge is 23:00) and Aylesbury (the number 280 Arriva which runs
every half hour and runs until about 20:00). The National Express web
(http://www.nationalexpress.co.uk) site offers a search service which
allows you to choose your starting point and destination and will give
you coach times.

Driving:
There are a number of major roads which take you to Oxford: A40/M40,
A34, A420/M4.
If you do drive then I would seriously recommend either arranging to
leave the car at the (pre-arranged) crash space or to use the park and
ride (there are 4 park and ride car parks with bus routes running E-W
and N-S through the town centre to them all). Parking in Oxford is a
nightmare at the best of times and Saturdays are VERY busy. There are
currently an awful lot of roadworks in the Oxford area (most notably the
section of the A34 which is one the ring road) and although they
*should* be finished by February I wouldn't like to bet on this......
NB: The Thames Valley Police are very zealous about drink driving. You
have been warned.

The City of Oxford WWW (http://www.oxfordcity.co.uk) site is a good
resource for information on how to get here.

How to get to Rosie O'Gradey's:
Assuming travel from either bus station or rail station. From the rail
station turn left towards town and you will see a big junction. You want
to take the the fork on the right (called Park End Street) this road
will take you past Office World, an antiques centre (once featured on
Watchdog for dodgy dealing!!), a dodgy nightclub (the Park End Club) and
you will find Rosie O'Gradey's at the end of this road on the left (just
before you get to a car park). From the bus station come out of the
same entrance as the bus came in and then turn right. At the end of the
road will be a car park (on the other side of the junction). You want
to cross over the road and head to the left round the car park. This
will take you onto Park End Street and Rosie O'Gradey's is on your
right.

How to get to the Head of the River:
Assuming travel from either bus station or rail station. From the rail
station turn left towards town and you will see a big junction. You want
to take the the fork on the left (called Hyth Bridge Street) this road
will take you past the Blackwells HQ, a futon shop and Jongleurs. Keep
walking till you to get to a crossroad (of sorts). You want to go
straight across (to the LHS of a Chinese Restaurant
called The Opium Den). This road is called George Street (the bus
station is on you left - people travelling by bus join the directions
here) walk straight down. Go right at the next cross road (past
Waterstones) onto Cornmarket Street. Stay on the left hand side of the
road. Walk straight down this road (crossing over another crossroad) ont
o St Aldates. You want to walk down this road for about 5 minutes
(passing Christ Church, the Music Faculty (where I work!) and the Police
Station on you left) and the Head of the River is on your left.

Crash Space
We currently don't have much crash space. I have room for two to four
(depending on whether people are willing to sleep on the floor) and
Kheldar may be able to offer some. Please email to arrange crash space.

Me: 97344209v@brookes.ac.uk
       stewart.tolhurstv@music.ox.ac.uk
I have a cat so if you are allergic this could be a problem!

Kheldar: kheldarsv@gwydion.highwayone.net

(remove the v from the email addresses as it is a uce trap)

More crash space (preferably within the city limits) would be helpful -
email me if you can help.

Alternatively you could book B&B (I would advise doing this well in
advance). Oxford is on the pricey side but there is a fair amount of
reasonable accomodation. The Oxford City Web site has a number of B&Bs
http://www.oxfordcity.co.uk/accom/ listed with all the relevant contact
details and web sites for some of them.

If you have any questions please email me.

Look forward to seeing you all.
Stewart

As the big date rushes towards us I thought it might be a good idea to just
remind everyone that it is happening :)

The web page with all the details on it is:
