Ross supplies us with the following:
Well, here's what will more than likely be my last spring orders for perdita.

F BAL - GOB
A Mos - Biel
A Vol - Khar
A Crp - Kiev

*sigh* stupid mistakes lead to poor circumstances. As I said to Drew...I'm too trusting by half to play diplomacy.

Hopefully I'll last out the Spaniard and the Pom. Doubt it though.

Suzi sugested that I am still in a position to make a difference...i.e. who gets my SCs when I fall. I figured that Drew should and Piers should rot in hell. :)

It seems that the F/G alliance is working extremely well. They are in position to finish off the Brit and the Spaniard (though the Brit still has some fight in him). Once this is done then the will be formidable in a sweep eastwards - especially if Germany can make gains in North Russia.

The best ally for the F/G alliance is now Egypt, working to weaken Italy. If Italy falls to France, and Poland/North Russia fall to Germany, then Ukraine and Egypt will find it extremely hard to make gains against this alliance...

If the trends continue then I suggest that an endgame consisting of France, germany and one other power, probably Ukraine, is highly likely.

The Franco german alliance is highly profitable for both, and provided that they work to maintain parity between themselves, and to define their spheres of interest, I don't see that it would break down soon. They have managed the alliance very successfully to date. I would anticipate that they have arranged DMZ's between them (Pic and Alsace?) and defined parameters for provinces such as Switzerland.

I expect to see France launching a full naval attack on Italy very soon, with Germany pounding England until she surrenders, then working against Poland. In the meantime Germany will move against North Russia.

I expect that Egypt will try and make gains against Italy - and that Italy, once very powerful, will suffer greatly.

I also expect that Ukraine will shortly make overtures for an alliance to stop the western advance, but that he will attempt to consolidate power in the east first - i.e. Russia is liable to be a wild card due to it's vulnerability, and so Piers will attempt to remove Russia from the equation.

In addition, I estimate that Ukraine will go all out to preserve poland - otherwise the eastern powers will have no capacity at all to build fleets in the northern seas. This would be disasterous...

The French unit in Portugal retreats to Madrid.

The French unit in the Gulf of Lyon retreats to Bar.

Well, THAT was interesting... just why IS Mikey taking so long to finish off the Spaniard? The ideal order combination would have been as above but with F Gib - SAO. This would have either cut support from SAO, or if SAO were used in an attacking capacity then Sve would have been forced to disband.

As it is, Spain is hanging in by the skin of her teeth, and Mikey is STILL having to commit forces in this area - when he really needs to start moving east.

What should Mike do now?

Portugal is the priority - once that falls then Morocco will fall at will.

Unfortunately I cannot see a way of attacking Portugal in an unbeatable way.

They key thing now is to separate Spain's forces. I'd consider the benefits of the following:

A Sve S A Mad H
A Mad S A Sve H
F Gib-SAO
F SOG S F Gib-SAO

This won't make any gains, but it will either leave Morocco vulnerable to a single unit, or it will seperate the units making each vulnerable to a single support.

There are other reasonable things to do, but they all involve some element of risk as far as I can see - especially is Seville is to remain occupied. This is slightly slower - but the Spaniard should be dead by the end of 2002. Whether Mikey does this or not is a different matter entirely, the Spaniard should have been dismissed a couple of years ago!

I'll put it on record now that I quite want Mikey to win. Why? Well, nobody has yet wone with France in Modern...

Unfortunately Mikey keeps making errors!

What about Germany? Well, Liverpool is about to die, horribly - it'll take a little longer to finish off the brit - let's have a look at how it may go.

The first thing will be an attack upon LvP. F NAO S F Iri-LvP, F Iri-LvP is as good a combo as any. F Nth-Edi (or Lon) would also be a good plan - just in case... (Nwy will support Nth to hold - not ideal as Murmansk becomes vulnerable later on. It's a matter of priorities).

Let us now assume that Iri or NAO is still in place, LvP is occupied by the German, as is Nth. Britain occupies Edi and Lon.

The german then has to put two of his units adjacent to a British home SC - this can be done fairly trivially. One possibility is F NAO-NWG with support from Nth... LvP would be moved to Wal. At most one of these could bounce. Similarly we could see F Iri-ENG with support from Nth , LvP moving to Clyde.

Thus at the end of Spring 2002 the Brit should have two SCs, one of which will easily fall to the German, the other will fall by the end of 2003. I cannot see any way for the Brit of preventing this.

As for the rest of the map? Well I have my ideas, but in the end it comes down to an east/west struggle between Ukraine/Egypt and France/Germany.

The eliminations from this point are likely to be as follows:

  • Spain, if Mike can get his act together, by end of 2002.
  • Britain, by the end of 2003

At this point it becomes more tricky... so in no particular order

  • Poland
  • Russia
  • Italy
Yes, Italy. I have the feeling that John will be squeezed out of existance. The eastern powers will want to bolster themselves with the Balkans, and the France only really has the Italian home SCs to advance into. John started his fall due to "Early Leader Syndrome" - and will finish it as he lies in the expansion path of many powers.

Russia will be down to three SCs soon, though Ross will take a long time to fall due to the defensive position it seems inevitable with enemy forces on two fronts.

Similarly, Poland looks very vulnerable to me, and could very easily lose ground... Of the three I think it'd be a close run thing as to who goes out first - though I wouldn't be surprised if one of them survives if the attention of their enemies is shifted elsewhere.

The following table summarises the changing situation, detailing the number of units currently owned, the number of SC's and the number of available adjustments, after the number of free SCs has been considered. A positive adjust number means that builds are due, a negative number means that units are to be removed. Note, builds do not have to be taken, they can be waived - please send a waive order to the GM if you wish to do this.

Also detailed are the number of SC's required to win (the win condition is 33 SC's).

This was the phase where I added the gif of Perdita to the perdita map. Piers commented on this saying:

...is that meant to be a fat lady singing, up there in Russia?

You cruel person!

It had never crossed my mind - honestly. Though it is rather apt, as it's looking like Russia will be on one SC by the end of 2002.
