Mikey, in France, had the following to say (corrected for massive typos):
Things are hotting up. My aim is to stop any stab from Hippie (Germany) for at least one turn. My moves are untrusting but benign as long as Hippie doesn't try anything. If, and I think he might, he sees me as his next target for a quick victory, then the two planned bounces should throw him off balance for a wee bit. Unfortunately, until I get another build, I cannot defend the Bay of Biscay successfully. However, this build should come this year from Morocco as Suzi's position there is indefensible. That said, I aim to convoy the Pie army to Africa, If I can get armies in Alg, WSA and fleet in Tun then I can attack Libya pretty well.

Up north, there is a defensible line between me and hippie - the Bri Par Swi line looks pretty defensible as long as I have armies in Auv & Pie. Austria is vulnerable but I don't have much I can do about that till Suzi is out of the Adriatic.

Quoth the Piers:

I think Hippie must be disbelieving his own luck. I cannot believe the risks he took with that last move. I guess that's why they worked, dammit!

Mikey has the following to say:

Hippie is only mildly concerned following my unintentional non bounce in MAO, whoops.

We hope that by me taking Hungary, we can split Piers' forces in two and really put pressure on him. If piers continues (as I think he has to now) his attack on Suzi, then he should leave himself off balance from Hippie to the north. This puts me at a disadvantage to hippie in our 'race' but a deals a deal.

Hippie (Germany) provides us with these statements:

Well this is gambling on the very effective juggernaut that Mike and I have been running since the start, lasting 2 more turns. He's getting nervous but I *think* I've persuaded him that we are still allies.(mind you, the Italian EOG statement did nothing to help this) The general plan is to try and get myself an advantage on both flanks while keeping the middle strong. Then conduct 2 seperate campaigns while at the same time seeing if I can sneak a force into the egyptian hinterland (via a bluff attack on Georgia) and try and make a dash for the last few remaining sc's before they can swing round.

If all fails, then to at least establish a stalemate line in the west and retreat to this, sit back and try and get Suzi to stab her none too reliable (in her eyes) allies. On the other hand, they are probably at this very moment plotting my downfall ;-)

Hippie

Suzi, who has charge of Egypt, wrote the following to the German player, the timestamp on both of the following messages suggest that they were written just before 2005 got underway.

My dear Hair Hippie,

> Greetings from Unter den Linden.

And reciprocal greetings from Egypt's fair shores...

> Wotcha Cleo,It's been very quiet from the banks of the Nile.
> I hope this does not signify a weakening of resolve against
> the Ukrainian. He is on the verge of collapse and if we can
> work quickly, the way is then set for the frenchie to get
> what he deserves.

Just pre-occupied, that's all - everytime I look at the map I see no hope for me at the moment - the Frenchie has me well and truly hemmed in with nowhere to go - and the Ukraine has me in a stalemate! I *really* *do* need to concentrate on the French at the moment to stop him intruding any further into my territories :-( (Although my "being in the way" of the Ukraine should be enough to help you for now - he has his back up against me in your fight - he cannot get through me provided I leave enough units there to stop him and you have the greater numbers - but I *must* free up something to go against the French with... arrrgggghhhhhh - If you can see anyway out of my predicament then your views are most welcome - but if I do nothing about the French *right now* then all is lost for me and I can see him storming through to the win!)

Your thoughtm?

Yours
Suzi

Suzi also provides us with the following, which she sent to Mikey (France):

Mon Ami,

the following bit is forwarded from my last missive to you:

> Please withdraw your troops from the border... a stalemate does
> nothing for either of us (and a stalemate is what it *will* be
> along that border) - it ties up both of our troops so that we
> can not use them against the others!! (and Ukraine knows this
> and is probably using it to his advantage).

I now include verbatim a statement from the Ukraine's last missive to me:

> Please, concentrate on Mike and leave me alone to handle Hippie.

If you believe the Ukraine to be on your side - I fear you may be being greatly mislead. We can - however - rectify the situation between us, provided you are prepared to talk to me about it. The leader of the Ukraine will stop at nothing to try and get us fighting amongst ourselves, while he calmly sits back and awaits the spoils!...

You are, however, in a position to not only rectify the position on our borders, but also to strike back at the Ukraine for having tried to instigate this between us (and also to quash the Italian for having got in the way!)...

Let me know how things stand between us... If I get no reply, then I will have to consider that you have declared war upon the state of Egypt :-(

Suzi
--
Empress Cleo of Egypt

I'll warn you know that the following comments are very sketchy... it was written whilst I had half an eye on a silly ITV drama...

It seems that Suzi's ploy was unsuccessful, and that Mikey and Hippie are going to continue until either Ukraine or Egypt become minor powers - then a stab is likely. My gut instinct is that if Germany continues to grow faster than France then France is likely to put the knife in earlier. In the position of Germany I'd be taking steps to help France feel a little more secure. This would mean helping France into Eastern Europe (in fact, an attack into Hungary has been ordered) - I'd also work toward getting France into Romania or Podolia (harder). The key for Germany is that French gains should be fleeting, i.e. the units the Frenchie pushes forwards should be hard for Mikey to support. Mikey, on the other hand should be looking to move South, to provide a minimum of aide to Germany against Ukraine - i.e. Serbia and Greece. also North Africa and Egypt.

The thing with this situation is that France could easily end up fighting the Ukraine and Egypt, where Germany would only be fighting the Ukraine. This can only be good for Germany. If I were in France's position I would be seeking a way to disentangle with Egypt, and form an Egypto-Franco alliance. From the current position this would provide a neat division of labour, France versus Germany and Egypt versus Ukraine.

This could be done quite slowly, in this coming phase, Morocco would be destroyed by attacking from Wsa with support of Algeria. In 2007 the Egyptian fleet in Tunisia would move east.

We should now have a French Morocco, and an Egyptian Tunis - much more natural for both sides. Both sides could then disarm by moving away from the front. It is true that France could claim all of North Africa by force regardless - but would this be successful long term?

The main problem with redirecting forces is that both Egypt and France are highly geared up for a naval battle, where if they were to ally then both would only need enough fleets to convoy units across the seas - however the surplus of fleets may not be too great IF some Egyptian fleets sail into the Black Sea against the Ukraine, excess French fleets can sail into the Atlantic. (I envisage two Egyptian convoy routes of Lbn/ION and Eme/Aeg - this leaves two excess fleets).

I don't expect that Egypt and France WILL bury the hatchett, it wouldn't be an easy thing even with the best will in the world - however I do suspect that if nothing is done along these lines that France and Egypt will be digging their own graves.

The following table summarises the changing situation, detailing the number of units currently owned, the number of SC's and the number of available adjustments, after the number of free SCs has been considered. A positive adjust number means that builds are due, a negative number means that units are to be removed. Note, builds do not have to be taken, they can be waived - please send a waive order to the GM if you wish to do this.

Also detailed are the number of SC's required to win (the win condition is 33 SC's).
