Rightio, after last years failed attempt (whose idea was it to go in
November anyway?), I'm determined that this year we will get a camping
meet so -

AFPeak District

Date: 3-5 July 1998
Base: Fieldhead Campsite, Adj. Nat.Park Visitor Centre, Edale, North
Derbyshire.
Getting There: Road-take the Edale Road from the A625 Castleton, turn
right at the Railway station into the village, campsite 300yrds on the
right. Rail -trains avaliable to Edale from Sheffield.

Then What?: Whatever you like, those arriving on the Friday evening
will, I'm sure, retire to the Ramblers Inn which I am told is very
good. On the Saturday morning, weather permitting, a walk up either Mam
Tor or for the more probably Kinder Scout. There are some other
flatter walks as well for those who prefer more gentel exercise and
don't need to work up an appitite! If the weather fails us
or if people are too hung over to cope with thinning air <g> there are
plenty of places to go round about including Chatsworth house, the
Caverns in Castleton (if you're feeling Trollish or Dwarfish) and
Ladybower reservoir. Or indeed, stay in the pub all day. In the
evening, a meal at the Ramblers (they cater for vegetarians) and
probably a bit of drinking as well. Sunday I've left open for those who
have a long way to travel, for those who don't possibly another walk or
visit if we walk the day before.

Of course, you don't have to stay overnight if you don't want to, just
join us for either the meal on Saturday night or the walks in the day.

Cost: Fieldhead Campsite/night -3.20ukp/person 1.10ukp/car
      Tel 01433 670386

Plus of course beer and food money.

What to bring: A tent or similar, sleeping bag and mat. Stout walking
boots, waterproofs (just in case) and some warm clothing, thermos of
something hot. Cooking stoves are optional if you have them. As are
things to cook in them, although if you don't bring a stove then I'm
sure you will want to bring something to eat or drink to warm up.
Chocolate (esp. KMC) and furry things as well as the usual afp/m-d
paraphinalia, psions, mobile phones, cccb's etc.

Interested? Drop me a line with AFPeak in the header and dig out those
boots!

[It's okay Maurice, I'll happily correct yuur tyops in the Subject
line... ;-) --Tap]

This is to confirm that the AFPeak meet will be going ahead. I am sorry
that Eric Wheelbrace will not be joining us, as some of you will be
aware. He will be sadly missed.

Those who will be arriving on the Friday night and are planning to eat
at the Ramblers, please let me know. The same goes for the Saturday
night. The Pub would like an idea of numbers. Full details of the meet
are below.

I've driven up to Edale this morning to check out the campsite and pub
(gosh this meet organising is thirsty work).

Dates, still the 3-5th July.

Firstly, the Fieldhead Campsite which assured me that there would be
no problem in fitting us in and that there was no need to book has
only 20 spaces left for tents. This means that anyone who wants to
go should book NOW mentioning that they are part of the AFP group.
The Rambler hotel, which is where I propose we eat does a wide
selection of food, including vegitarian and spicy meals, also
childrens meals. I have a copy of the menu and they are quite
reasonably priced.

Bearing all this in mind, I would be greatful if you book the campsite
individually.

Fieldhead Campsite (01433) 670386

terms
3.20ukp/p/night
2.20ukp/under 14/night
1.10/car/night
Any queries to the campsite please.

For the Rambler, if you can let me know if you want to eat Friday
and/or Saturday evening and I'll liase with them for numbers. (Those
of you who have already done this can ignore that bit).

Revised Directions:

>From A625 through Castleton or Hathersage, turn onto the Edale Roade
in the village of Hope. Follow this road until the large car park on
the right and the T-junction. Turn right here passing under the
railway bridge (Edale station on left) passing The Rambler hotel on
the left and then on about 150yds. The turning for the campsite is on
the right, next to the Visitior Centre.

If anyone needs anything such as maps, Kendle Mint Cake or an
introduction to the history of the area, all of these are avaliable
from the National Park Visitor Centre in Edale (01433) 670207.

Other points:

I have been advised that the following is a Good Idea:

Waterproofs (note: not Showerproofs)
Warm clothing & spares (Kinder Scout summit will not be much above
freezing).
Avoid (if possible) wearing denim as it shrinks when wet and does not
dry easily.
A first aid kit.
Map (of the area) 1:50,000 scale and proper compass.
Robust walking boots.
A good torch (with new batteries)

If anyone can think of anything else then please let me know.

Sorry if this causes problems but the campsite assured me there would
not be a problem only last week.

If there are, there is another slightly dearer campsite close by,
anyone who needs the phone number, let me know.

(Hopefully) See you there.

Right then, all things now being sorted. We shall meet at 7.00pm
onwards in the Rambler pub in Edale on Friday 3rd of July. Anyone who
is going and has NOT let me know if they require meals at the pub,
then I need to know -before- Tuesday 30th June so I can let them know
the numbers.

Apart from that, keep thinking "Sunshine and clear blue skies" for the
next week and I'll see you all on the 3rd.
