Not so fond of Hole in the River, but Don't Dream It's over is a good song... or it was, anyway :-)

Again, 'tis only easy to get behind if you know the words and tune to the original, in which the metre is inconsistent and the lyrics often do not rhyme or scan... I've tried to keep them not rhyming or scanning the same way in the same places as its parent song. :-)

Oh, and it's gibberish if you haven't read Small Gods (mild spoilers for which are contained therein)

I Dream It's Over - a song for Brutha

There is freedom within, there is freedom without
Wishing for a deluge in the desert sun
There's a battle ahead, many battles are lost
But you'll never see the end of the road
While you're travelling with Om

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
Despite Vorbis' sins
He comes, he comes
To start a war between us
We know he won't win

Now I'm stowing their scrolls, there's a hole in the Truth;
Yes my memory's causing them suspicion but there's no proof.
In these papers today - tales of war and of waste
But they want me to keep the siege engine page!

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
Despite Vorbis' sins
He comes, he comes
To start a war between us
We know he won't win

There's an army outside - hear them beating their drums
As I'm counting the steps to the door of your Maze
Through the shadows ahead, dodging traps in the roof
Once I'm through I'll find some way to bring these folks relief [1]

Hey now, hey now
Don't dream it's over
Hey now, hey now
Despite Vorbis' sins
He comes, he comes
To start a war between us
Don't ever let him win...

AfPhantom "I *do* filk non-Crowded-House songs sometimes, honest I do..."

[1] You think *that* line's unwieldy? Well, yes it is... But the original's worse :-) "Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief"... Sheesh! I broke my own rules a bit here and made the filk fit the tune a little better than the original words :-) Same number of syllables, but the accents work a bit better - I have already chastised myself thoroughly for this break with filking convention...

Oops.

You may (or may not) be wondering why the lyrics differ from the title of the song... It's cos I couldn't decide whether it was better as "I dream it's over" to fit Brutha's mood, or "Don't dream it's over" to match the original song. I went and posted the damn thing in a moment of distraction before I'd made my mind up - hence the disparity.

On reflection, I think it would've been better to change the lyrics to fit the title. *sigh*

Ho-hum...

:-)
